Character
Political Nihilism is the philosophy that destruction of all political, religious, and social order is necessary for any improvement and government, family, law, and law enforcement are not necessary. Also it's the rejection of non-rationalized or unproven assertions. Red horse believes in this political nihilism he even states, "The total ruin of institutions and morals is an act of creation." (Gardner,118) this shows his belief of having to destroy the government in place to create something good or something that works. Red horse goes on to explain what government and what a revolution is and how it is justified. He says that a government is just a state of legitimate violence, "The state is an organization of violence, a monopoly in what it is pleased to call legitimate violence" (Gardner,119). He says this to explain that the government is not a force of good and has no purpose but to just justify violence he also states, "All systems are evil" (Gardner,120) this truly shows his political nihilistic viewpoint.
Red Horse is very adamant about a revolution and wants to take out the establishment. He states, "Revolution, my dear prince, is not the substitution of immoral for moral, or illegitimate for legitimate violence; it is simply the pitting of power against power, where the issue is freedom for the winners and enslavement of the rest" (Gardner,119). In this statement we see that Red Horse believes that a revolution really only has two sides and that is freedom or enslavement. Red Horse believes that all systems are evil and doesn't think there should be government at all. So when he wants to destroy government he wants to leave it destroyed and never let it come back because he believes that government is pure evil, " All governments are evil. Not just a trifle evil. Monstrously evil" (Gardner,120). All his beliefs are that of a political nihilist because of his view point that any sort of governing body is evil, that people should revolt against the government, and that there is not such thing as universal justice, "If you want me to help you destroy a government, I'm here to serve. But as for Universal Justice-" (Gardner,120).
